Quinta do Côtto was the first Quinta I ever visited in the Douro Valley! It was 2008, October 11th. A Saturday. Bad timing on my part, as the Quinta was deserted and quiet – and I had no appointment. The only thing I could do was taking a few photos. I was a little bit too shy to venture around the marvelous looking building… and it was a cloudy day, so the photos don’t even do justice to the beauty of the manor house.
Unfortunately, so far this has been my only visit to the Quinta – I somehow never made it back.
I must also confess that I never tried their wines. I read a little bit about Miguel Champalimaud, the owner and driving force of this wine company. He is obviously an interesting character, has very strong opinions and isn’t afraid to criticize the estabalishment.
The Quinta is located close to the western end of the Douro Valley – which means it receives more rain than most of the other parts of the Valley. Less concentrated grapes – better for Tawnies than for Vintage Ports, I would assume. I’m looking forward to visit this property at some point of time and to taste their still and Port Wines.
It’s great to still have a few things on my bucket-list…
