The Ruby Port is the most simple Port Wine. It is a blend from several years, very smooth to drink, an explosion of red fruits, a very nice drink while watching TV. It has been in very large casks for 3 to 5 years and massively filtered – therefore it will not develop anymore in the bottle. This is kind of bread-and-butter-business for many Port Wine houses.
If you like this kind of Port, then you have most likely a Dutch passport… The Netherlands are the country with by far the largest consumption of Ruby Port (in 2016, the Dutch drank over 6 million liters of Ruby, the Belgian 3.4 million, the UK 2.8 million, France and Portugal both 1.4 million liters).
As Ruby Ports are not very complex wines and they don’t develop, you will nearly never find a wine critique talking about them. They exist – but they are ignored… Great wines to cook with… but not a great wine to open on your 50th birthday or at the wedding of your son.
