This is not a Lodge – it’s more a wine store – however with a marvelous selection!
When we enter this small house, which informs us on the outside that Kopke is the “Oldest Port Wine House”, we see immediately a wall full of amazing Kopke Colheitas.
Starting from 1937 we find nearly for every year a Colheita… a great place to find a special birthday bottle. But, why I really like this place, is the fact that you can taste many of these great wines. Upstairs there are two floors where you can sample flights of beautiful Port Wines. It feels really nice to sit upstairs by the window and looking over the river towards Ribeira while enjoying a Colheita from 1964.
The wines have been bottled only recently – therefore we don’t need to worry about bottle variation due to wrong storage.
If you like old Tawnies and you want to do a really serious tasting of amazing old Ports then this is – other than the Graham’s Lodge – the best place in Gaia to do so. A nice selection of chocolate is served together with the Tawnies.
The are many tasting menus available – from the entry level Ports to some really old nice wines. You can spend a lot of money here if you have an expansive palate – but it’s worth it.
